Roman Spoon. Circa 1st-2nd century CE. Copper-alloy, 9.85g. 140mm. This type of small rounded bowl spoon is known as the cochleare and was common in the Britain during the first and second centuries CE. The meaning of the Roman word "cochleare" is litterally a measure of a spoonful. Ref: Hattatt, 1989, p.476, fig.29. A cochleare is shown found in a surgeon's kit in Pompeii.
